Nishihata and Fujimoto treatd 25 cases of ma-stoiditis which developed secondarly to acute otitis media with deep roentgen-ray treatment and obtained the following results: (a) In 10 cases of the 25 or 40% mastoiditis was comple-tely and definitely cured; (b) in 9 other cases or 36 % the cure was determined with some difficulty but the disease finally subsided wi-thout surgical interventions; (c) in remaining 6 cases or 24% the treatment proved ineffective and mastoideectomy was resorted to. Group (b) was considered as protracted form of otitis me-dia; while in group (c) bony degeneration of mastoid cells was invariably Present in all cases at opeartion. The deep roentgen-ray therapy for this condition if ffective at all would show its signs after 1 or 2 treatments by suddenly marked decrease of aural discharges or their complete disappearance. The effectiveness of the treatment was greater, the earlier were such treatment begun. (In the first or second week of the disease). In applying roentgen ray therapy to treatment of acute otitis media the authors believed protracted fractional method as it is sed in that of malignancies seemed to be quite unnecessry.
