  • Look Inside

Though the two skin conditions, erythema neonatorum toxicum and ichthyosis sebacea neonatorum, are not infrequently seen in new-born babies, they are rarely encountered in dermatology departments, for both of them are spontaneously clear in a few days, without requiring medical treatments. In view of this fact, a statistical study was made on the 272 new-born babies delivered in our hospital during the period of 10 months from April 1964 to January 1965, and the following data were obtained.

The eruptions of erythema neonatorum toxicum were morphologically classified into 7 types, ranging from papules to widish erythemas. The skin lesions of ichthyosis sebacea neonatorum were found consisting of smalllamellae and band-like or scale-like large lamellae. The sites of predilection were the neck, chest and abdomen in the former disease, and the abdomen, flexor aspects of the joints and palmoplantar regions in the latter. On the average, the incidence of severe cases was 8% and 2%, the onset was 3.3 days and 2.5 days after birth, and the duration was 2.5 days and 7 days, respectivelyh.
