  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

 1. A convulsive strain of mouse (ep strain) isdescribed, in which convulsions can be induced inevery adult animals by postural stimuli causing dis-equilib ration.

The biochemical defects studied in this strainconcern some aspects of the metabolism of freeamino acids, ammonia and acetylcholine in thebrain. Gpc and dd strain of mice were used ascontrol groups.

 2. During the resting state the following substances were found per g of the brain:

 3. During the preconvulsive and convulsivestage, marked rise of brain ammonia can be induced in ep mice by applying postural stimulation.During the same stage, significant fall of acetylcholine is induced in response to postural stimulation. The fall is smaller in the previously "non stimulated" than in the previously "stimulated" epmice, and the fall is not significant during therefractory period.

 4. The rate of acetylcholine resynthesis in isolated brain tissues of ep mice is higher than thatof control strain. Cholinesterase activity of braintissues is reduced in the previously "stimulated"ep mice.

There is no difference between the respiratoryrates of brain slices of the different strains.
