Recent epidemiological studies of multiple sclerosis (MS) have been reviewed with especial impor-tance placed on the pathogenetic significcance. Geographically, MS is prevalent in the temperate zone between 35 and 50 degrees both in the northern and southern hemispheres, and within each zone there is a positve correlation between the MS prevalence and the latitude. In addition, several geographic foci with extremely high prevalence rate, such as Shetland and Orkney islands and north-east Scotland, are known, and chronological clustering of MS incidence in a certain area like Faroe Islands has been documented.
