  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The abnormality of neurotransmitters has been extensively studied in patients with Alzheimer-type dementia (ATD), since findings obtained from these studies may provide a clue for the therapy of ATD. Research on the central cholinergic neuron of ATD has been considered important for elucidating the pathogenesis of ATD.

The activity of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) was reduced remarkably in all areas of the cerebral cortex of ATD patients with an early onset. The decrease in maximum ChAT activity was less prominent in ATD with a late onset, which showed a relatively slow progress.
