The activity of choline acetyltransferase (CAT)or acetylcholine esterase (ACE) is markedly decreased in the brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease, indicating the decreased activity of cholinergic neuron. However, similar changes seem to occur in dopaminergic, serotonergic, noradrenergic and GABA nergic neurons. The concentration of both homovanillic acid (HVA)and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5 HIAA) and the glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) activity were significantly lower in the cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) of patients with Alzheimer-type senile dementia than in that of control subjects.
