I．Behavioral teratologyの概念と歴史

　behavioral teratologyとは，行動の発達異常を研究する学問である。とりわけ，実験動物を用いて環境因子により誘発される仔の行動異常を対象にすることが多いが，遺伝的な行動発達異常の研究も含まれるべきである。behavioral teratologyは，形態の発生異常（先天奇形）が研究の中心であった今までの先天異常学の拡大，すなわち従来の催奇形性から新しい発生毒性という概念の確立にともない，機能の発生異常の一つとして重要視されてきた。

　behavioral teratologyという語は1963年WerboffとGottlieb^42）により提唱されたものであるが，この語に必ずしも賛成しない人もある。日本語訳は行動奇形学と仮訳しているが^34），むしろ行動発生異常学あるいは行動発達異常学が望ましい。このうち環境要因による発生毒性学の一分野としてのbehavioral teratologyは，developmental neurotoxicology発生神経毒性学，あるいはbehavioral developmental toxicology行動発生毒性学というべきであろうと考える。

Behavioral teratology is the science that deals with abnormal behavioral development. The first study on experimental animals was reported in 1940 and the term behavioral teratology was proposed by Werboff and Gottlieb in 1963. It has become one of the most important issues in teratology, especially in developmental toxicity testings. In 1975, the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare issued the revised guidelines for reproduction tests of pharmaceutical drugs and has requested behavioral observations on the offspring. The governments of United Kingdom also has requested some behavioral assessment of the offspring.
