The mechanism that regulates the development of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity has been studied in the primary cell cultures fromspinal cord of fetal mouse. Trophic factors from skeletal muscle and glial cells stimulated the de-velopment of ChAT activity almost 10-fold. Depo-larizing agents also increased ChAT activity via the influx of Ca++ suggesting a control on moto-neuron by the upper neurons.
