  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Diverse pathological phenomena occur during sleep. Among them, attacks of migraine and angina pectoris frequently occur during REM sleep. Dream anxiety attack, painful penile erection, and hypnagogic hallucinations and sleep paralysis in narcoleptic patients occur exclusively during REM sleep.

Nocturnal sleep in patients with endogenous depression or atypical psychosis is severely disturbed, and is characterized by short REM latency in addition to prolonged sleep latency. Findings of sleep studies in these psychotic patients suggest that the disturbance in their brain involves the neural mechanisms for sleep.
