  • Look Inside

Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is characterized by repetitive episodes of apnea occurring specifically during sleep. This syndrome consists of heavy snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, nocturnal insomnia, automatic behavior and other psychiatric symptoms. Sleep apnea is classified into three types, obstructive, central, and mixed apnea. Paradoxical respiratory movements occur during obstructive sleep apnea. No respiratory movements appear during central apnea. Mixed apnea begins with central apnea, however, respiratory movements appear in the later half of the apneic episode.
