  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The purpose of the present report is to describe our recent knowledge of central mechanisms critically implicated in the generation of paradoxical sleep (PS). In the first part of this report, we have described anatomical organization and neurophysiological mechanisms relevant to the generation of: (a) ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) activity, one of the most prominent 'phasic' events; and (b) postural atonia, one of the most characteristic 'tonic' events, which more or less define the paradoxical phase of sleep.
