  • Look Inside

There exist states of paradoxical sleep lacking some of its phenomena such as PGO wave, neocortical EEG desynchronization and postural atonia. These remind us that the paradoxical sleep may consist of principal mechanisms of the generation of paradoxical sleep itself and subsystems responsible for the various tonic and phasic events. In this paper, therefore, the executive systems of three main events and possible mechanisms of the generation of paradoxical sleep were briefly discussed mainly following results and concepts of Sakai and Jouvet.

The primary neurons of executive system of PGO wave, which are cholinergic in nature, situate the cell bodies in the nucleus laterodorsalis tegmenti including X area of Sakai. They project monosynaptically to the lateral geniculate body and the intralaminar thalamic nuclei of both sides, through which PGO waves are conveyed to not only the occipital cortex but also parietal and temporal cortices.
