Stage 1-REM is an unusual sleep state characterized by concomitant occurrence of low voltage, mixed frequency EEG, rapid eye movements (REMs), and tonic discharge in the mental and submental muscles. Because of these characteristics, stage 1-REM can not be classified into stage 1 or stage REM defined by Rechtschaffen and Kales (1968). Stage 1-REM was first recognized in man after administration of tricyclic antidepressants (clomipramine and imipramine) and it was reported with the name "sommeil rapide dissocie" by Passouant et al. (1972).
