  • Look Inside

Recent progress in the application of NMR to the study of neuromuscular disease was reviewed.

NMR spectroscopy has made possible the non-invasive investigation of the metabolism of skeletal muscle. Various information on the composition of pathological tissue can be obtained from 1H and 13C NMR spectra. Energy exchange can be followed by measurement of 31P NMR spectra. It is used to study changes in intermediary metabolites of skeletal muscle during exercise and relaxation, and the clinical value is illustrated in the patients with defective muscle glycolysis, mitochondrial myopathy and other various neuromuscular disease who otherwise have required multiple biopsies of muscle.
