  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The precise role of the thymus in the pathogenesis of myasthenia gravis (MG) remains to be elucidated, although the thymus is known to be almost inevitably involved in MG. In our pathological surgery on 104 biopsied eases, lymphoid hyperplasia showed essentially same morphological features but most severe degree of inflammations compared with changes seen in other autoimmune diseases. These findings suggest that the thymus in MG could be regarded as the primary site of autosensitization in addition to common changes in autoimmune process involving lymphoid organs.

In this paper, we describe first the relation of histology of the thymus to clinical picture. Secondly, recent findings on the immunohisto-chemical features of the thymic cellular com-ponents including myoid cells will be shown.
