Immunological properties of AChR in relationto the pathogenesis of myasthenia gravis

The decrease in number of acetylcholine receptor (AChR) at the neuromuscular junction is sufficient to account for the typical clinical and electrophysiological manifestations of myasthenia gravis (MG), and the pathogenesis of this abnormality involves an autoimmune attack against the AChR. In line with this, a humoral immune mechanism has been shown to be implicated in this disease, particularly in the accelerated degradation of AChR by antibodies, and antibody-dependent, complement-mediated lysis of the endplate membrane.
