  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Study on the molecular biology of receptors requires the employment of special techniques. In order to localize and quantify receptors cytologically, methods are required for labeling receptors in situ; and in order to study the structural basis of receptor ligand-binding specificities or the mechanism by which receptors control membrane permeability, methods are required for their purification. Although nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) is thought to be present in extremely low concentration in most tissues, electric organs provide a relatively rich source of receptors that greatly facilitate biochemical studies.
