  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor is not only one of the most well-characterized receptor for neurotransmitters, but also one of the most thoroughly investigated membrane proteins.

Acetylcholine receptor is isolated as an intrinsic membrane protein from electric organ of electric fishes or skeletal muscle and is shown to be composed of four different subunits assembled in a transmembrane pentamer α2βγδ. The complete sequence of the four subunits has been obtainedby the application of comptementary DNA cloning and sequencing technique.
