Abstract

In 1869, Argyll Robertson published two arti-cles and described peculiar pupillary phenomena. According to his original description, the charac-teristic features of the syndrome were as follows: (1) the retina was sensitive to light, (2) the pupil did not respond on exposure to light, (3) there was pupillary contraction during the act of accommodation for near objects, (4) the pupils contracted further with extracts of the Calabar bean (physostigmine), but they dilated poorly with atropine, and (5) the pupils were very small.
