  • Look Inside

Dystonia is a type of motor disorder characterized by slow, writing, involuntary movement of extremities, neck or trunk (dystonic movement) and fixed abnormal posture (dystonic posture) due to abnormal involuntary contraction of skeletal muscles resulting from diseases of the basal ganglia. Although responsible lesions and pathophysiology of dystonia are not yet established, heterogeneous motor innervation has been proposed for idiopathic dystonia (dystonia musculorum deformans : DMD) and symptomatic dystonia (Yanagisawa and Goto, 1971).

Characterisitics of dystonia in DMD are follows.
