Abstract

Pineal gland synthesizes and secretes a physio-logically active substance, melatonin. Melatonin is synthesized from L-tryptophan via serotonin by four successive enzymic reactions: Serotonin is converted to N-acetylserotonin by serotoninN-acetyltransferase (NAT) and then to melatonin by hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT). The content of melatonin in pineal gland exhibits a marked circadian rhythm in various species of vertebrates, which is generated by a circadian change of NAT activity. The regulation mechan-ism of NAT rhythm is very much different between mammals and birds.
