Concept or oscillators for induction of circadian rhythms

I．はじめに

　外界の状態によって1日の長さを識別できない恒常の環境下で，生物の行動や個々の機能的活動に，ほぼ1日の周期をもつリズムが観察される時，これをサーカディアンリズム（circadian rhythm）と呼ぶ。概日リズムと訳されることもある。この命名はミネソタ大学のFranzHalbergによる。

　哺乳類がほぼ24時間の周期の体内時計（内因性時計，endogenous clockとも呼ばれる）をもつことはJohns Hopkins大学のCurt Richterが永年ラットの車まわし運動を観察した多くの興味深いデータからも明らかである。

Abstract

Development of the concept of the endogenous oscillators to induce circadian rhythms was brieflysurveyed. Characteristics of the circadian clock was clarified particularly by C. Richter with his life-long study in the rat. In 1973, we have started lesion experiment of the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), using polygraphic recording of sleep-wakefulness cycles. Power spectral analysis revealed total abolishment of 24 hour peak in these rats. These results strongly impressed us.
