Abstract

The current knowledge of the neural mechanisms that control the micturition reflex may be sum-marized as follows:

1.As the urine collects in the bladder, the pelvic vesical sensory impulses excite the pudendal motoneurons innervating the external urethral sphincter muscles. This reflex prevents the urine from escaping the bladder by increasing the ure-thral resistance.

The closing of the internal urethral orifice may be partly due to enhanced reflex outflow of the hypogastric nerves produced by the pelvic and hypogastric centripetal impulses from the bladder.
