Abstract

The application of cyclotron produced positron emitting isotopes, especially carbon-11, nitrogen 13, oxygen 15 and fluorine-18 provides the poten-tial for a great variety of biochemical studies by quantitative imaging of the living human brain.

This paper described various techniques and their role in the studies of brain function. (1) regional blood volume, (2) regional blood flow, (3) regional mean transit time, (4) regional oxy-gen metabolism, (5) regional glucose metabolism (6) regional amino acid metabolism (7) regional brain enzyme activity, especially MAO-B, (8) receptor mapping, especially dopamine receptor.
