  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Chimeric mice have been produced on a large scale in several laboratories by techniques of embryonic manipulation. Two or more embryos may be aggregated during early cleavage stages to produce a single embryo, or cells from oneembryo may be injected into the blastocyst cavity of another, to become incorporated into the inner cell mass and thus to produce a chimeric embryo. Such techniques have been applied to other mammals, particulary rabbits, sheep, and rats, though with only very limited success. A total of four chimeric rats have so far been reported in the literature (Mayer et al., Mullen et al.).
