Abstract

The earliest research on sleep mechanism began at the beginning of the 20th century. Effort has been devoted to find cerebral structues which can induce sleep upon their activation. The solitary tract nucleus and the median thalamic nuclei were the structures the first studied.

Transection of the brain stem at different levels was made to demonstrate the existene of the systems responsible for the maintenance of wakefulness and the induction of sleep. Classical preparations developed in these studies are the encephale isole, the cerveau isole and the pre-trigeminal midpontine cat.
