Anatomy of paradoxical sleep

はじめに

　覚醒—睡眠の神経機構については永年にわたる多くの仕事の積上げがあるが，今なお議論が続いている。視床下部などの前脳に主体があるのか，中脳以下の脳幹後部が鍵を握るのか論争が続き，体液説もまた衣を変えてこれに加わっている。

　逆説睡眠も睡眠の一様態であるから当然この論争のなかにあるが，その発現中枢ともいえる機構が下位脳幹にあるとすることにはほぼ意見が一致していると思える。そこで本小文では，この中枢的機構とこれに連なるいくつかの逆説睡眠の現象が関係する機構とを，神経伝達物質と線維連絡の面から議論してみたい。

　The putative neuroanatomical mechanisms participating in the generation of the paradoxicalsleep and related events were discussed on thebasis of cholinergic and aminergic mechanismsmainly in the cat brain.

　The cholinergic mechanism was studied byimmunohistochemistry of choline acetyl-transferase(CAT) recently developed by Kimura et al., inwhich the cell bodies showing positive immunostaining and those covered by immunoreactiveterminal profiles were indentified to be cholinergicand cholinoceptive neurons, respectively.
