Abstract

The neuroanatomical and electrophysiological studies concerning the central mechanisms of gustation were reviewed.

(1) Branches of the facial, glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves which carry gustatory messages from the oral cavity reach the nucleus of the solitary tracts (NTS). Many investigators have shown that these 3 nerves terminate rostrocaudally in this order in NTS with some overlap. In rats, NTS neurons in the caudal (viscerosensory) zone of NTS project to the ipsilateral lateral pontine parabrachial nuclei (PBN), while those in the rostral (gustatory) zone to the ipsilateral medial PBN.
