Abstract

An attempt is made in this review to distinguish the functional properties of paraneurons from those of neurons and neurosecretory cells on the basis of recent publications. Secretion of paraneurons, neurons and neurosecretory cells consist of following four main steps; ingestion, biosynthesis, intracel-lular transport, and extrusion. The steps of ingestion, biosynthesis and intracellular transport in paraneurons are common with the corresponding steps in neurons and neurosecretory cells. The final step, extrusion, is denoted by stimulus-extrusion coupling.
