Abstract

The lateral-line organs in the aquatic verte-brates are classified into two groups, the ordinary organs and the specialized organs. The specialized organs are known as electro-receptors. The ordinary lateral-line organs are further distin-guished into canal organs and free neuromasts. The free neuromast has dual functions, mechano-reception and chemoreception.

The receptive mechanism of hair cells, the receptor cells of the free neuromast, to chemical stimuli is similar to that of taste receptors.
