Abstract

The hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical axis in the rat was decomposed in vivo into a subsystem consisting of the pituitary and adrenal glands. This was done by interrupting the portal vessels through electrocoagulation. By applying various amounts of exogenous CRF and ACTH to the subsystem, circadian variation in the sensitivity of pituitary and adrenal levels was examined. It was found that sensitivity to CRF of the pituitary as well as to ACTH of the adrenal in the after-noon was about twice larger than in the morning.
