Abstract

This article reviews toxic substances, especially neurotoxins, obtained from sea anemone nema-tocysts. Most of sea anemone neurotoxins purified so far are low molecular weight basic polypeptides with high content of cystein residue. Anemonia sulcata toxin II, the most extensively studied one, contains 47 amino acid residues and three disulfide bridges but no α-helical nor β-sheet structure. On the other hand hemolytic toxins contain less or no cystein residues and have larger molecular weight than neurotoxins.
