Abstract

The role of the intracellular proteinases, espe-cially Ca2+ activated neutral protease (CANP) was briefly reviewed.

Increased activities of various proteinases, in-cluding lysosomal enzymes have been reported in muscle diseases, especially progressive muscular dystrophy. But, this may not be the primary cause of the disease. Lysosomal proteinases, espe-cially cathepsin requires optimal pH of 5.0 or less for its activation and it is unlikely that the extra lysosomal pH in muscle cells ever decreases to such degree.
