Abstract

The structure and function of olfactory receptor cell were analyzed by thin sectioning, freeze-replica and electro-physiological methods.

The olfactory receptor cell as primary sensory cell is a bipolar neuron, whose dendrite extends to the surface of olfactory mucosa and forms olfactory knob covered with either cilia or microvilli. The axon reaches the olfactory bulb where it terminates on the dendrite of mitral cell.

The olfactory receptor cell is stimulated by odorants and discharges impulses with slow changes of receptor potential.
