Abstract

Paraplegia and leucoencephalopathy are rare but serious complications that arise once in a great while from intrathecal injection of metho-trexate (MTX), which usually seems to be a safe and effective antineoplastic agent used intrathecally for CNS involvement of leukemia, leptomeningeal carcinomatosis and primary brain tumor.

In an autopsied case, in which paraplegia had developed gradually after intrathecal MTX for leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, we found a peculiar degeneration of the brainstem and the spinal cord.
