  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The neuropathological examination was performed on five autopsy cases of chronic alcoholic intoxication (Table 1, 3, Fig. 1-5).

Vascular changes in the paraventricular and periaqueductal area, which had been considered to be a characteristic finding of Wernicke's encephalopathy, were observed in two out of our five cases. Simultaneously, all the five cases had the nerve cells representing, more or less, the feature of "primare Reizung", which had been emphasized in the reports of pellagra. Gliosiswas also detected extensively in the central nervous tissue in all the five cases.
