To illustrate possible roles of linguistic principles in the study of aphasia, some examples of the application of linguistic methodology to the investigation of aphasic disorders, e.g., impair-ments related to the phonological, syntactic, and lexicalsemantic components, are presented.

The results from these studies appear to indicate: (1) Application of linguistic concepts and methodology discloses orderly patterns of aphasic impairment that reflect the inherent structure of language at various levels and in different compo-nents.
