総論—神経筋系研究に応用される組織培養的方法

Methods of tissue culture for the nerve-muscle studies

　体内における機能単位の一つに運動単位（motor unit）というものがある。これは脊髄前柱に存在する運動神経細胞に発する刺激を，その突起である軸索を介して骨格筋に伝え，その収縮を起させる仕掛けである。運動単位の機能を遂行させるため，神経細胞と筋細胞という異なったタイプの細胞の連絡部位には運動終板（motorendplate）という装置が形成されている。この神経筋接合（neuromuscular junction）部は，形態学的，生理学的，薬理学的ならびに病理学的に，古くから研究されてきた分野である。

　一方，その発生機序を明らかにさせるため，神経筋を生体から切り離して培養するということが，今世紀初め頃から試みられてきた。しかしその成功がみられるようになったのは，ここ10年ぐらいの間である。近時，生理学者，生化学者は神経発生学に興味を持ち始めているように思う。ここに現在用いられている各種神経筋培養法をreviewし，この方面の研究がさらに発展することを期待したい。ついで，筋および神経のみの培養法についても，簡単に触れたい。

Within the past decade, there has been an increasing number of studies that have demon-strated synaptogenesis in cell and organ cultures of nerve and muscle. It is now apparent that (1) it is feasible to establish neuromuscular junctions in a number of different in vitro systems; (2) the junctions formed in these systems are remarkably similar to those that form in vivo; and (3) these model systems offer great promise for the future analysis of synaptogenesis, as a develop-mental, physiological, and pathological problem.
