 Carbohydrates (glycogen, glucose), long-chain fatty acids and acetone bodies (β-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate) can be utilized efficiently in exercising skeletal muscles. However, the degree of participation of these substances in energy production depends on nutritional conditions, duration of work-performance, and intensity of muscular exercise.

 Several clinical entities indicating inborn errors of metabolic pathways for these substances have been discovered recently, and the clinical observations of such inborn errors of metabolism could throw further light on the role of each substance for muscular exercise in man.
