  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Long term follow up studies were performed on the three groups of infants who had had either one of the following neonatal conditions which often caused the future neurologic and/or mental handicaps; 1) very low birth weight (birth weight between 751 and 1,500 g), 2) idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) and 3) purulent meningitis.

Long term prognosis of 279 very low birth weight infants who had been cared in our nursery in the past 20 years from 1953 to 1972 showed a progressive improvement along with the change in the infant care methods.
