  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A Gram-negative bacterium Campylobacter jejuni is a major antecedent agent for the development of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). Patients with GBS subsequent to C. jejuni enteritis frequently have motor axonopathy. Sera from the patients often have IgG autoantibody to GM1 ganglioside. Lipopolysaccharide of C. jejuni isolated from GBS patients has GM1 epitope. Some investigators have shown that anti-GM1 antibody can cause motor nerve dysfunction. In some patients with GBS following C. jejuni infection, molecular mimicry may function in the development of the syndrome.
