  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

HAM/TSP is a chronic progressive neurologic disease which is clinically characterized by spastic paraparesis and sphincter disfunction and neuropathologically by chronic inflammatory changes including perivascular lymphocytic infiltration and degeneration of myelin and axons in the spinal cord. Previous studies revealed many immunological abnormalities concomitant with a high load of HTLV-I proviral DNA in the circulating mononuclear cells in HAM/TSP, such as an increase of activated T cells, increased spontaneous PBL proliferation (SPP) and a high mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines in peripheral blood lymphocytes.
