Sound is the vibration of air. Sound is transmitted to the hair cell in the inner ear, and transduced to electrical signal. The transduction of sound to the electrical signal was performed by gating of mechanically gated ion channels located in the hair cell hair bundle. Thus transduced electrical signal is transmitted through a synapse to the afferent nerve fiber, and then to the brain stem auditory nucleus. Glutamate is the most likely neurotransmit-ter released from hair cells.
