Cerebral palsy (CP) is a generic term for a group of disorders characterized by abnormal control of movement or posture, early onset, and the absence of recognized underlying progressive disease. CP is classified into spastic, athetoid, and other types based on the pattern of muscle tone, posture, and movements. The incidence of CP per 1,000 live births in Japan has increased from 1 to 2 during the 1980's, mainly due to the growing number of very low birth weight infants surviving with later develop-ment of spastic type CP. The incidence of athetoid type CP, on the other hand, has declined.
