  • Look Inside

The control of saccadic eye movements by the basal ganglia is accomplished through the series of GABAergic (inhibitory) connections from the caudate nucleus to the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) and SNr to the superior colliculus (SC). SNr neurons usually inhibit the activity of SC neurons with their high and tonic discharge. Depending on the behavioral contexts, which typically require cognitive and memory functions, neurons in the caudate nucleus phasically fire. This caudate activity dysinhibits SC and facilitates initiation of saccades toward the contralateral side.
