  • Look Inside

Induction of abnormal involuntary movement by subthalamic lesion suggests that unnecessary movements are suppressed in normal animals by the basal ganglia. The basal ganglia consist of putamen/caudate nucleus (Put/Cd) as input nuclei, internal pallidum/substantia nigra pars reticulata (GPi/SNr) as output nuclei. The input nuclei are connected to the output ones in two ways ; (1) directly and (2) indirectly via external pallidum (GPe) and subthalamic nucleus (STN).
