  • Look Inside

In order to answer the question as to “what the basal ganglia are doing”, it is important to investigate how their output systems are organized. The major outflow from the basal ganglia is funnelled through the internal segment of the globus pallidus (GPi) and the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr), and is directed towards a variety of subcortical structures. The superior colliculus (SC; optic tectum), a brainstem visuomotor center, is among the most thoroughly studied output targets for the basal ganglia.
