  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Physiological studies using animal subjects have revealed the important roles of the basal ganglia in the initiation and suppression of saccadic eye movements. The superior colliculus, a final common path for generation of voluntary saccades, receives sustained inhibition from the substantia nigra pars reticulata, an output of the basal ganglia.
