NO is thought to work as an intercellular messenger in hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) and cerebellar long-term depression (LTD). In the cerebellum, simultaneous activation of parallel and climbing fibers evokes long-term depression (LTD) of the parallel fiber/Purkinje cell synapses. Since parallel and climbing fibers terminate at different loci of Purkinje cell dendrite, there must be some basal mechanisms which enable heterosynaptic interaction for evoking LTD.
