  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We investigated surgically resected specimens obtained from 154 patients with intractable partial epilepsy. Most of the specimens could be classified as one of the following four types : mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS), peculiar congenital benign tumor resulting from a dysplastic process in the embryonic stage, cortical dysplasia and cavernous angioma. Seventy-two cases of MTS showed various sclerotic changes, with neuronal cell loss and glial proliferation not only in the hippocampus but also in the parahippocampal and fusiform gyrus.
